Many convenient and popular methods of payment originated from the Scandinavian region. That is the case with MobilePay, as well. As a mobile-first transfer system, this payment processor came in just the right time, following the boom of online casinos with mobile-optimized versions. After hearing about it, CBM took some time to carefully evaluate and rate MobilePay. We give you everything you need to know about the most valued mobile payment method in Denmark. Our review covers the best casino sites accepting it, as well as MobilePay casino bonuses, transaction timeframes and many other relevant aspects.
MobilePay was developed in 2013 as a mobile payment application designed to make transfers easier in Denmark. The Danske Bank supported the project, and the company behind it is MobilePay Denmark A/S. In fact, the app was developed as a co-creation project between Danske Bank, Trifork and In2media. Initially, users were able to transfer 1,000 kroner per day. Soon, hundreds of thousands were using the app, which prompted the company to add more functionality to it, such as availability in shops, webshops and supermarket checkouts. The company became a separate entity in 2017 and MobilePay got a new logo design.
The Danish Payment Council issued a report in 2019, showing that using MobilePay saves people time and it saves millions of Danish kroner for the country’s society. Now, more than 5.8 million people use MobilePay, not just for everyday instant shopping, but also for online casinos. The brand collaborates with 60+ banks in the Nordic region and maintains offices in Denmark (Copenhagen, Brabrand), Finland (Helsinki) and Lithuania (Vilnius).
MobilePay surfaced as an easy, fast and hassle-free payment method. Customers don’t have to enter card numbers or fetch their wallet to complete a purchase – they only need their phone, which is mostly right by their side.
Created in Denmark, MobilePay still remains dominant and mostly used in the Danish market. Any plans for expansion have not been made public at the moment of writing, which doesn’t mean the solution won’t ever leave Scandinavia. Denmark got the app in May 2013. In December of the same year, the MobilePay application came to Finland, as well. Finnish customers and online casino players still have the option to use the app in its full capacity. Some have expressed wishes for MobilePay to become present in the Faroe Islands, but there hasn’t been any progress in that direction yet.
Apart from Denmark and Finland, the app became operational in Greenland in August 2020. MobilePay was also marketed in Norway in 2015, and over 300,000 Norwegians downloaded the app. However, due to competition from Vipps, MobilePay had to discontinue all service in Norway in 2018.
Meet the requirements
MobilePay users have to be residents in Denmark. They also must have an Android or iPhone smartphone with a Danish phone number, a Danish CPR-number, a Danish bank account with a card, and be at least 15 years old. Of course, you need to be older than that to gamble. Also, note that you can’t have an administrative CPR number for this purpose. Foreigners who live in their own country, but work in Denmark, can’t use the service. Private people can only have one MobilePay account. In Finland, a different kind of requirements might apply.
Download and install the app
Depending on your device, you need to visit either the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store. MobilePay has a version of the app compatible with both the most popular OS formats in the Danish market, the iOS and Android. The app is free for download and the installation is automatic.
Set up your account in-app
Open the app and begin the setup. Choose “Aktivér ny bruger” (Activate New User) and enter your mobile phone number. As soon as you type in the phone number, you will receive a confirmation code, and the app will automatically verify it. You can also select a code yourself for future logins.
Verify your MobilePay profile
There are three levels of verification with MobilePay. The first one is through the Danish Personal Identification number (CPR-nummer). By providing your personnummer, the ten-digit number that serves as your unique national identification number, you will complete the initial level of verification. If you care to go on, you may also provide your NemID, commonly used as a login solution for Danish internet banks. Billedlegitimation or PhotoID is the final step in the app user identification process and will unlock higher transaction limits.
Link your bank card with the app
To add funds to the MobilePay app, you must link your profile to a card issued in your name. The app accepts Dankort, MasterCard, Visa and Visa Electron. One can link up to 10 cards or accounts with the app and name them as they like. That way, the user can easily see which cards and accounts are being used for a payment. You must always have at least one card associated with MobilePay.
Currently, more than 60 banks work with MobilePay. If you are a customer of one of the partner banks (you most likely already are), you will be able to use the service smoothly and securely. Some of the associated banks are Danske Bank, Nordea, Jyske Bank, Sydbank, Spar Nord Bank, SEB, Nordfyns, Fynske Bank and Kreditbanken. MobilePay works with the following currencies: Danish kroner (DKK), Euro (EUR).
Upon choosing a casino for a MobilePay deposit, keep in mind that only sites that display the DGA seal are licensed to provide gambling activities in Denmark. You should only choose to play at legally licensed casinos, under the supervision of the Danish Gambling Authority (Spillemyndigheden).
- To complete the deposit, head straight to the casino cashier and locate the MobilePay logo.
- Click on it and provide your phone number, as well as the amount you wish to upload. You’ll receive a payment request in your app that will last 5 minutes.
- Accept the request, authenticate the transaction with your 4-digit code and the money will be deducted from your linked card/account.
At this time, Danish online casinos do not allow withdrawing money from gambling accounts via MobilePay. A user can receive transactions from other MobilePay users, but casinos can’t release your winnings and send them to the app. You will be prompted to select an alternative method for withdrawals. Most casinos will prioritize making direct withdrawals to your NemKonto via a Danish bank transfer.
One of the greatest things about MobilePay is the fact that its services cost nothing for private users. The app is free and the transactions carry no charges. It was like this since the beginning. Originally, Danske Bank intended to offer MobilePay free of charge until the end of 2013. However, they decided to let the solution remain free of charge for private users beyond that, as well.
The business model that MobilePay runs on is not user-oriented in the sense that they need customer contributions to sustain their operations. For instance, the company pays a fee to Danske Bank for the use of the service. On the other hand, casinos may charge a fee and this is something that can differ from one operator to another. In addition, the service does have the possibility of setting up business accounts. They come with small fees for people doing business (around 0.30-0.80 kroner per transaction).
When you deposit with MobilePay, the money will be transferred to your gaming account immediately. It is as simple as that. Once you have everything setup properly, there will be no reason for delays once you approve the transaction in your app. After you confirm, just give it a few seconds up to a minute and refresh your casino page. The money should be neatly credited to your gambling account, ready for play.
Withdrawal timeframes will depend on the alternative method you select from the cashier. Ultimately, make sure to pick a secure, efficient method for your payouts.
It’s only natural that you question the limitations that might exist concerning your online casino deposits and withdrawals. In the case of MobilePay, we must clear up some things. The amounts you can transfer are determined by your verification. We’ve already explained that there are three levels of identification. If you verify with your CPR-nummer, you can transfer a total of 3,000 kroner a day. At this level, you can send and receive up to 80,000 kr. a year in total.
Verifying with NemID increases the limits to 10,000-15,000 kr. daily. There is no daily limit to how much you can receive. PhotoID provides the highest possible amount limits, up to 300,000 kroner a year. The minimum amount one can transfer with MobilePay is 100 kroner, which is the minimum deposit amount at most casinos accepting MobilePay. The maximum sum per deposit is different from one casino to another, yet we’ve seen most sites offering max limits up to 10,000 kr.
The brand is committed to strengthening the security around the app. Your account and card information are protected in the MobilePay app via the code you use to sign in. All transfers are being logged in the system, so the service can intervene and close MobilePay profiles with suspicious transfers. Moreover, the app requires users to apply “3D-Secure”, “MasterCard Identity Check”, “Visa Secure” and “Dankort Secured by Nets” as internationally known security standards when adding cards to their profile. When you add a new payment card, you must use either NemID or a one-time code and a password.
The app is rather flexible and adheres to the user’s needs nicely in terms of logging in and authentication. To use Touch ID (fingerprint) for MobilePay, you need to enable Touch ID both under “Settings” on your mobile and in the MobilePay app. Authentication via SMS and personal password is a good alternative if you do not have a NemID key app or NemID key viewer.
MobilePay provides several different ways of getting in touch with the company representatives. If you find yourself in a situation where you need to consult with someone, or you simply want to file a complaint or ask a question, make sure to use these means of communication. You can send an email to [email protected] or make use of the phone line provided for private users.
The official site does not have a live chat option, but they are transparent about their working hours, so you know exactly when to reach out. Support agents can be reached during the following time intervals:
- Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday: 08:00-20:00
- Friday: 09:00-18:00
- Saturday, Sunday: 10:00-16:00
The Android MobilePay app you can grab from the Google Play Store has a 4.3 rating out of 5. We are glad to see the representatives are interacting with customers and reviewers quite often on the store page. New updates seem to come regularly and bugs or any inconveniences are fixed as soon as possible.
Most of the users are satisfied and they usually report inconveniences during verification. For instance, if they are having trouble scanning photos. However, that is often not the issue with the app itself.
One user described MobilePay like this: “It’s reliable, easy to use and fast (a transaction takes a couple of seconds, the other apps I used sometimes took hours or even days)”. Another user claims that MobilePay is essential to have in Denmark.
MobilePay comes with various perks that make everyday life easier for the majority of Danes. Sending gifts has become something the developers have improved a lot.
That being said, we would like to highlight the MobilePay Box feature. It is a new smart initiative launched by MobilePay in 2020. It allows users to create joint shopping lists in the app. For example, should you lay out the gift for an upcoming birthday party, MobilePay Box can help you manage it. The MobilePay Box feature costs 15 kroner per 100 kroner deposited.
It wouldn’t be wrong to describe MobilePay as the perfect partner for a mobile casino. The app makes depositing as fast as logging in, and allows you to access your funds wherever you may be. The app itself has two versions, one for Android and the other one for iOS. Both are free for download at their respective online stores. The interface is, as all things Scandinavian, minimalistic and extremely functional. The developers didn’t waste any time and effort on fluff and bling, just pure utility and convenience.
The swiping mechanic is used to its full capacity and overall the software is user-friendly. The app comes complete with various clever features; for instance, the customers doing some online shopping can pay and provide their shipping address in a single step. In addition, you can see if a transfer has been completed under “Activities” in the MobilePay app.
- Surveys indicate that MobilePay was the most popular mobile payment service in Denmark in 2017. It was preferred by 74% of the interviewed people. The Dankort app came second in the ranking, whereas PayPal was third. In 2018, MobilePay came second in ranking for online shopping payment methods, after credit/debit cards.
- MobilePay is the first Danish company ever to get its digital sound for sending and receiving money trademarked.
- Launched in May 2013, MobilePay was installed 877,000 times by the end of that year. On the first day, 25,000 people downloaded the app.
- MobilePay is installed on 9 out of 10 smartphones in Denmark, making it one of the most popular apps in the country.
- It seems that in terms of mobile payment services, MobilePay has no rival in Denmark. The app was voted as “the most indispensable app” in the country, ranked above Facebook even.
- On the other hand, MobilePay has fierce competition with Siirto in Finland. Despite being supported by numerous Finnish banks, the brand still has to work a lot to conquer the second Scandinavian country in which it launched.
MobilePay is suitable for mobile casino deposits. However, most of them will not approve MobilePay withdrawals. For this purpose, you will be offered other methods of cashing out, such as direct bank transfer.
The service itself is completely free of charge. MobilePay will not add costs to your transactions, which doesn’t necessarily apply to casinos. We haven’t encountered any Danish casinos charging fees for the use of MobilePay, but make sure to check before depositing.
It is just as safe as using Dankort. The system will safeguard your information and apply authentication measures before sending any money from your app profile.
The MobilePay application is currently available in Denmark, Finland and Greenland. It was present in Norway for a while, but isn’t anymore.
It is not possible to carry out MobilePay casino withdrawals. Players have to select an alternative method for payouts.
MobilePay is approved by the Danish Gambling Authority. The app was developed in cooperation with Danske Bank and takes part in the European Mobile Payment System Association (EMPSA).
The money you have at your disposal through MobilePay is already stored on your existing bank account or your credit/debit card. Therefore, you can cash out from an ATM or your local bank office.
