The ICBPI is an organization with a long history, much longer than most of us are alive, actually. It was founded way back in 1939, by the People’s Banks of Cremona, Intra, Lodi, Lecco, Luine, Verona, and Varese.

The initial goal of the organization was to provide a standard for banking services in Italy. Quickly, the idea took off, and more and more banks joined the fold. With every decade, the ICBPI directly contributed to the better of financial education in Italy, as well as improving the security of existing services.

A landmark year in the history of the ICBPI was 1986 when CartaSi was launched. Initially, the project was the work of 4 central banks and 16 credit institutions. The aim was to popularize the use of credit and debit cards, as a safer and much more convenient alternative to cash. More and more banks joined the fold until the number reached 880 in 2007.

Interestingly, the ICBPI didn’t actually create CartaSi. The consortium only acquired the platform in 2009, announcing a whole series of changes. And none of those changes was bigger than the one that occurred in 2017 when CartaSi officially became Nexi. The rebrand took place due to a change of direction within the company. Their new goal was to be more active in the fields of digital banking and interbank cooperation.

After several rounds of reorganizations and a lengthy rebranding effort, the switch from CartaSi to Nexi was finally complete in 2018. Much of the ICBPI’s old goals and features remained the same, but a stronger outlook towards the digital world was immediately noticeable.

• March 2023: Nexi Croatia and PBZ Card Collaborate to Offer Fast and Easy Payment Solutions to Merchants.
• March 2025: Nexi has launched Tap to Pay on iPhone for merchants in Switzerland and Finland, following prior implementations in Italy, Germany, Austria, and Sweden. This functionality allows merchants to accept contactless payments—including cards, Apple Pay, and digital wallets—using just an iPhone and Nexi’s SoftPOS feature within the MyPayments app, removing the need for extra hardware or payment terminals.

Is Nexi a secure payment option? Our answer would be – definitely. Most Italian banks issue this card, which is basically a guarantee of security. In addition to standard procedures, such as anti-money laundering, identity verifications, Nexi has yet another layer of protection. To confirm every transaction, you need to enter an OTP, which will be sent to the phone number you provided during registration.
